I’ve read that pads with hard plastic caps don’t provide much more protection than pads without, that all they really do is promote sliding along hard surfaces during a fall, which prevents the pads from sliding around and exposing the areas they should be protecting. This is not true. One thing the caps definitely do is spread out the impact from pointy things or sharp things over a larger flat surface. And in the case of these pads, that surface is backed by high tech padding or whatever. So they work well. I have taken a knee directly down onto a rock while wearing these pads and felt zero pain or discomfort. Had I not been wearing the pads, I think I would have hurt my knee pretty badly, maybe even broken it. These pads are not the best in hot Austin TX weather, but I wear them religiously anyway.
